Winter Poisons to Watchout For

Antifreeze -
Dogs and cats are attracted to this substance because of its sweet smell and pleasant taste. Unfortunately, the active ingredient, ethylene glycol, can cause massive kidney damage and death if ingested, even in small amounts. Antifreeze containing propylene glycol is safer in pet households.

Rock salt -
Pets that go outside can pick up chemical ice melts, ice and rock salt in their foot pads. When they lick it off, it can cause inflammaton of their digestive tract. Wipe your pet’s feet with a washcloth when they come inside. Consider sand instead of salt for icy walkways.

Ice Melting Products -
These can be irritating to skin and mouth. Depending on the actual ingredient of the ice melt and the quantity, signs of ingestion would include excessive drooling, depression, vomiting or even electrolyte imbalances.

Your animal may become poisoned in spite of your best efforts to prevent it. Since a few minutes can often mean the difference between life and death with regard to poisonings, you should contact your veterinarian quickly if you suspect your pet has ingested any of these toxic substances. Keep our number (210-684-1448) and the number for the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (1-888-4 ANI-HELP) in a convenient location. If you suspect that your pet has ingested something poisonous, seek medical attention immediately!
