Natural Pet Stain Removal

As much as we love our pets, we don’t want our house to show the evidence of their “accidents” with unsightly spots and offensive smells. Using products found in your own kitchen, you can tackle those messes quickly and without the use of harsh chemicals.

*Please refer to your carpet, flooring and washing machine care guide before using any of the following suggested treatments.

Puppy Trouble
Cleaning & Neutralizing:
Using a spray bottle with a mixture of 1/2 vinegar and 1/2 hot water can remove a fresh urine stain and help neutralize the odor it causes. Lightly saturate the entire stain and place a clean towel or good amount of white paper towels on top of the stain. Place a heavy item on top and blot up as much of the liquid as possible. Do not rub, but blot so that the liquid is absorbed the towels rather than into the rug and padding underneath. The smell of vinegar will dissipate as it dries.

You can also use a few drops of dish washing detergent into the solution of vinegar and warm water that is listed above for a bit more help on set in stains. Be sure to rinse thoroughly after using soap. If left in the carpet, soap may attract dirt more rapidly to the treated area in the future.

Undiluted vinegar can also be used to wash urine off of hardwood floors - wash area, rinse with warm water, and dry immediately.

Deodorizing:
To insure that all of the smell from the urine has been removed after the stains have been cleaned up you can also use baking soda. Wait until the area has been fully cleaned and dried. Apply a layer of baking soda and allow it to sit for several hours or even overnight. Then, vacuum up the stain, removing the smell.

For machine washable items, add a liberal amount to your laundry to remove the odor (some suggest a whole box). Be sure to air dry the item(s) if the scent persists.

The biggest mistake that you can make is using an ammonia based cleaner. Ammonia smells a lot like pet urine and will ultimately draw the pet back to the area to soil it again.
