Canine Influenza Virus (CIV) in San Antonio

CIV in San Antonio As reported by KENS 5 TV, San Antonio experienced an outbreak of the highly contagious Canine Influenza Virus H3N8 (CIV) earlier this year. CIV is an airborne virus passed between dogs. It can also be spread via contaminated surfaces. Alarmingly, 20% of CIV infected dogs can develop a severe respiratory pneumonia resulting in a mortality rate of up to 8%. Some dogs infected with CIV may show no clinical signs and still spread the virus. Others may develop coughing, sneezing with nasal discharge, and fever.

Due to this emergence of the Canine Influenza Virus, Town & Country is now offering the CIV vaccine to our canine patients. The CIV vaccination protocol requires an initial vaccine followed by a booster in 3 weeks. Subsequently, pets should be vaccinated annually. For your pet’s protection, this vaccination series should be completed at least 1 week prior to your pet being exposed to a kennel or play group environment. Puppies 8 weeks and older should be vaccinated.

The highly communicable nature of this virus has caused Town & Country to update our canine boarding and grooming vaccination requirements. All dogs to board with us must have their initial CIV vaccination series completed at least 1 week prior to their scheduled check-in date. Our grooming facilities allow us to accommodate pets under 40 pounds who have not been vaccinated for CIV, as long as they receive their initial vaccination during their grooming appointment. Pets over 40 pounds must follow the above requirements for boarding.

We are dedicated to the prevention and treatment of disease in your family’s pets. Vaccination is your pet’s best protection. Please call us with any questions you may have regarding CIV or our updated vaccination protocols.
